This retrofit guide part explains how to properly assemble an AUTOMATiQ hub interface on a wheel, replacing the current Automatic or Harmony hub interface system of your eBike. This is part of a series of 5 retrofit guides to install the new AUTOMATiQ.

To retrofit an enviolo-equipped bicycle you will need to shop for these parts. As a retailer, you can buy all parts at orders.enviolo.com.

Standard items

In any retrofit, you will always need to have these 3 enviolo parts:

AUTOMATiQ hub interface	Hub magnet ring	Sprocket magnet ring

You will also need one of these enviolo wire harnesses:

BOSCH BES1 and BES2 (in addition to a Bosch Y-shape cable)	Harmony retrofit cable (in addition to a Y-shaped cable from an old Harmony setup)	BOSCH BES3 HPP compatible	Open-ended cable for custom solutions

Additional items

Additionally, you may want to include an optional QLiQ controller, which you can fit and pair later on in the retrofit.

Depending on your case, you may need a compatible Y-shaped cable to connect the AUTOMATiQ Hub Interface harness to the drive system.

Step-by-step instructions

1 - Make sure you have the right cable harness

We offer 3 cable variants:

• J6 - Open-ended cable for custom solutions
  • WIRE-AT3-DS1K-OE (1000 mm)
• J6 - J15 BOSCH BES2 (Gen2, Gen3, and Gen4)
  • WIRE-AT3-400-OE (400 mm)
  • WIRE-AT3-600-OE (600 mm)
• J6 - J10 BOSCH BES3
  • WIRE-AT-600-OE-12V (600 mm)
  • WIRE-AT-800-OE-12V (800 mm)

Remember that other partners (e.g. Serial 1, FIT, Specialized) offer their own wire harness solutions.

Open-ended cable for custom solutions

When working on custom solutions, please take the following into account:

• Input power for the latest AUTOMATiQ (OE-1) must be between 9.5 - 55V. For older AUTOMATiQ (OE) versions the power input must be between 18 - 55V.
• Use the WIRE-AT3-DS-OE open-end wire to connect to your drive system.

Warranty when using custom open-ended cables

Always consult local (country, state) warranty regulations first before using customized solutions.

You may need approval from the engine manufacturer to avoid losing the engine’s warranty if you connect the AUTOMATiQ to the engine using a custom open-ended cable.

2 - Disassemble the old magnet rings

The previous magnet rings (see example below), will no longer measure correctly with the new AUTOMATiQ (e.g. calibration will no longer work).

Make sure to use the current model rings. Current magnet rings have yellow stickers on the inside (see below).

Legacy magnet rings

These were the previous hub magnet rings:

• A - Automatic, Automatic+ (these have a white sticker inside).
• B - Harmony, Harmony H|sync (these look like part of the hub shell).

Tools

• 2,5mm Allen key
• Flat screwdriver (optional)

Disassembly instructions

Disassemble the legacy sprocket magnet ring

1. Remove the old sprocket magnet.
   • The previous sprocket magnet ring is just clipped in and can be easily removed without a tool.

Disassemble the legacy hub magnet ring

For the Automatic, or Automatic+ ring:

1. Remove the old magnet ring using a 2,5mm Allen key.

For the Harmony, or Harmony H|sync ring:

1. Remove the old magnet disk.
   • Use the help of a flat screwdriver to lift the disk
   • Note that this magnet disc can be confused as being part of the hub shell.

3 - Assemble the new magnet rings

New magnet rings

The enviolo AUTOMATiQ systems come with a sprocket magnet ring (A) that must be secured onto the assembled sprocket snap ring on the hub. The twelve magnets on the sprocket magnet ring provide a pedal cadence to the AUTOMATiQ system.

Additionally, the AUTOMATiQ systems also require a hub magnet ring (B) that must be secured over the internal gear hub, and flush with the internal gear hub cover. Six magnets in the hub magnet ring provide the eBike speed for the AUTOMATiQ system.

You’ll need to assemble both for the system to work.

Tools

• 2,5mm Allen key
• Sprocket magnet ring
• Hub magnet ring (for the Urban hub this is a smaller version) 

Assembly instructions

Assemble the sprocket magnet ring

1. Place the sprocket on the hub.
2. Place the sprocket spacer (skip if you have a Gates sprocket).
3. Place the snap ring.
4. Install the sprocket magnet ring over the assembled sprocket snap ring (A).
   • Make sure the magnets are facing the sprocket.
   • Make sure the “tooth” on the sprocket magnet ring aligns with the opening of the sprocket snap ring.

Assemble the hub magnet ring

1. Install the hub magnet ring over the right-hand side of the hub.
2. Secure the magnet ring with the included fastener (D).
   • The fastener may need to be unthreaded to allow initial fitment.
   • The magnet ring should face the larger diameter flange outboard and the fastener inboard.
   • The magnet ring should not stick out too much, and it should be aligned with the flat surface of the hub (as shown below).
3. Torque the fastener to 1.0 Nm (9 in-lbs).
   • Make sure the fixation point is not on one of the outside spokes.

4 - Assemble the AUTOMATiQ hub interface

You can assemble the AUTOMATiQ on two different axle types:

• 135mm solid axle wheel
• 148mm modular axle wheel

Follow the correct instructions below for your bike.

On a 135mm solid axle wheel

• Scratch pen or marker
• Torque wrench with 17mm socket

Assembly instructions

1. Use the uninstalled hub interface to determine the desired orientation.
   • Orientation should be forward, parallel to the chainstay with the AUTOMATiQ main connector facing forward (A).
2. Move the AUTOMATiQ hub interface along the dropout to ensure clearance at different axle positions (B).
3. Use a scratch pen or marker to mark the hub interface in the middle of the dropout.
4. Remove the anti-shift retainer if one is installed on the hub.
   • The anti-shift retainer comes typically installed on new hubs.
     
5. Suspend the AUTOMATiQ hub interface over the right-hand axle, and align the axle flats with the marked position.
   • A no-turn washer can be installed over the AUTOMATiQ hub interface to align the assembly angle.
6. When the assembly angle is aligned, seat the AUTOMATiQ hub interface fully onto the axle.
7. Thread the right-hand nut, serrations facing outward, onto the axle.
   • Tighten it to 8-10 Nm.

On a 148mm modular axle wheel

Tools

• 17mm flat wrench
• Torque wrench with 17mm socket
• 5mm hex wrench
• 3mm hex wrench

Assembly instructions

1. Use the uninstalled hub interface to determine the desired orientation.
   • Orientation should be forward, parallel to the chainstay with the AUTOMATiQ main connector facing forward (A).
     
2. Move the AUTOMATiQ hub interface along the dropout to ensure clearance at different axle positions (B).
   
3. Remove the anti-shift retainer if one is installed on the hub.
   • The anti-shift retainer comes typically installed on new hubs.
     
4. Match the position of the AHI with the position of torque arm on the other (left) side of hub.
   • Place the torque arm onto the axle and orientate it in an angle that it slides into the boss on the brake adapter or dropout.
   • Note: The torque arm can only be mount in three positions.
5. Fix the torque arm with 3mm hex wrench
6. When the assembly angle is aligned, seat the AUTOMATiQ hub interface fully onto the axle.
7. Thread the right-hand nut, serrations facing outward, onto the axle.
   • Tighten it to 8-10 Nm.
