This article will guide and recommend how to adequately build a wheel with all Enviolo hubs.
Backward compatibility
This guide is compatible with legacy 135mm solid axle hubs (Commercial/CO, Sportive/SP, Cargo/CA, N360, N380, N380SE), and 148mm modular axle hubs (Sportive/SP, and Cargo/CA).
Considerations before lacing
Our hubs can be laced with 20" to 29" wheels. We offer both 32 and 36-hole variants. When selecting spokes and rims, please ensure you select durable spokes and rims suitable for use with an internal gear hub or rear motor.
Note that the anti-shift retainer provides the correct wheel spacing, and should remain on the hub during lacing and wheel building. We would recommend that you keep it during the lacing process.
To have a symmetric wheel assembly on the old 148mm version, please insert the wheel dishing spacer between the hub and the non-drive side bolt (A).
Recommended lacing pattern
For lacing, we recommend:
- We suggest lacing using a 2-cross pattern for 26" and 700c wheels.
- Use a 3-cross pattern only if the rim allows the nipples to be effectively in line with the spokes.
- For 24" or smaller wheels a 1-cross pattern is suggested.
We do not recommend:
- A 3-cross pattern is not recommended since the hub size makes the angle between the spoke and flange unfavorable.
- Radial lacing is not recommended.
Recommended spoke diameter
All hubs except Extreme
For almost all enviolo hubs (135mm, 142mm, 148mm), including City, Trekking, Heavy Duty, and legacy models, the spoke diameter should be:
- Maximum - 13 gauge (2.34mm).
- Minimum - 14 gauge (2.00mm).
Only Extreme
For the Extreme hub only (135mm, 148mm), the spoke diameter should be:
- Maximum - 12 gauge (2.6mm).
- Minimum - 13 gauge (2.34mm).
How to calculate the spoke length
You can use any online spoke calculator tool like the one from Sapim.
You'll find the table with all necessary Enviolo measuring below.
